Thanksgiving: Food, Family, and Gratitude

November 28, 2024

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, family gatherings, and indulging in hearty food—a holiday brimming with rich traditions and memories. This year, we’re pleased to share some of the Lantek staff’s favorite Thanksgiving traditions and reflections, offering a glimpse into what makes this holiday so meaningful.

A Brief History of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving in the United States is a tradition that dates back to 1621, when Pilgrims and the Native American Wampanoag people came together for a three-day harvest celebration. This feast celebrated a successful growing season for the Pilgrims, who had arrived from England with limited supplies and were taught to survive in the new land by the native population. However, it wasn’t until 1863, during the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, designating it as a day for Americans to “give thanks” for their blessings.

Our Favorite Thanksgiving Foods

Today’s Thanksgiving table still honors the feast’s original purpose: celebrating the bounty of the harvest. Many foods are rooted in North American traditions and use classic ingredients, though they’ve evolved over time.

Turkey has become the quintessential centerpiece and grew popular due to its size and availability. For Lantek’s Shaun, turkey with cranberry sauce is a favorite, while Shannon’s homemade sausage stuffing takes center stage.

Other favorites include cornbread, baked potatoes, butternut squash soup, and croissants, beloved by Mona and Elainna. For Jane, Thanksgiving food is extra special because it’s prepared with love and recipes passed down through generations.

Annual Traditions

Thanksgiving traditions vary widely, but a few are universally beloved. Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a classic way to kick off the day, a highlight for team members Elizabeth, Jane, and Shaun.

Family board games are a staple for Mona and Shannon, offering fun and laughter after a hearty meal, while Elainna enjoys baking treats for everyone to enjoy. Shaun sees the day as the perfect segue into the festive season, decorating for Christmas after the feast.

For families spread out across the world, Thanksgiving is a special time to come together and reconnect. Whether it’s sharing gratitude, or simply spending quality time, the day is all about togetherness.

From all of us at Lantek, Happy Thanksgiving!
